Ginger Beer

Making ginger beer consists of 3 steps:

Ginger Bug

For the ginger Bug you will need the following ingredients and materials:

This process takes 3 days to make. On the first day we set up our ginger bug, and on the next two days we have to feed it.

Day 1

  1. Cut a section of the ginger root around the last section of your thumb (or enough for 1 tablespoon)
  2. Use the peeler to peel the brown exterior of the ginger
    • This brown stuff floats in water and we don't really want that
  3. Cut the ginger into very small cubes with your kitchen knife
  4. Put the water in the jar
  5. Put 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1 tablespoon of ginger in the jar
  6. Gently mix the contents of the jar until the sugar is dissolved
  7. Put the coffee filter upside down in the jar, like a little hat. Then use the rubber band to seal the jar with the filter.

Day 2

  1. Repeat steps 2 and 3 from day 1 (cut some ginger)
  2. Unseal the jar
  3. Add a tablespoon of sugar and ginger
  4. Gently mix until the sugar is dissolved and reseal the jar

Day 3

By this day you should see some bubbles form at the top of the water.

  1. Repeat steps 2 and 3 from day 1 (cut some ginger). BUT this time just cut enough for half a tablespoon.
  2. Unseal the jar
  3. Add a tablespoon of sugar and ginger
  4. Gently mix until the sugar is dissolved and reseal the jar

REMEMBER TO ALSO ON DAY 3 MAKE YOUR GINGER SYRUP

Ginger Syrup

On day 3, we will make our ginger syrup, which is like a sweet juice with a lot of ginger flavor and some lemon touches. We will let it rest overnight and then combine it with our ginger bug on day 4.

Here are the ingredients:

On to the recipe: 1. Filter some water 1. Cut the ginger, I don't have a reference to how much you should cut yet, sorry * You don't need to peel it this time though, it doesn't matter if it floats 1. Boil the water (I use an electric kettle to do so, but you can do it directly in the pot if you want) 1. Put the boiled water in the pot (if its not already in there) 1. Add the sugar and ginger and mix constantly for 5 minutes 1. Cover the pot and let the mix rest on low heat for 8 minutes 1. Cut the heat and let rest for 2 hours. 1. Transfer the mix to your bottles 1. Squeeze the juice of your lemons 1. Put the lemon juice equally in your bottles 1. Seal the bottles and let the mixture rest overnight

Last Stretch

On day 4, take 1/4 cup of your ginger bug and divide it equally between your bottles.

From this day onwards, every two days remember to open and close your bottles. So they do not explode.

Keep doing this for 6 days and you got it. I think.

IMPORTANT

This is a recipe I'm still working on. I haven't been able to get consistent results yet. I just put it here because I also use this site to remember my own recipes.
