How to use Steamer Baskets

I bought some steamer baskets from a chinese shop and they are really cool! So I wanted to share how to use them. And some considerations to have.

How to use them

First of all, you use them by putting them over a pot where you are cooking something that emits steam. In my case I cook a lot of rice on the weekends so I can heat it up during the week for an easy and quick dinner. And also to make fried rice during the week too.

Once you have that, simply put them over the pot and that's all. Whatever you put inside of them will cook with the steam.

You can make steamed veggies or frozen gyosas if your local store has them. They turn out really good when you steam them, less crispy and more chewy.

How to clean them

After each use you MUST CLEAN THEM. Just grab a paper towel and dry the interior of the baskets after you take out your food. You don't need to wash them with soap or other stuff, just drying them is enough.

However it's really important to do this immediately after you use them. If you don't the wooden basket will start to rot. It happened to a friend so yeah, clean your baskets, it only takes like 30 seconds.

Additional Notes

Before you go buy them make sure to take measurements of the diameter of the pot you are going to use them with. The ones I bought have 14cm of diameter, and my smaller pot had a diameter of 16 cm. I got a tall milk boiling pot that worked, it was a good purchase though, it's very tall and can cook like 8 portions of rice at the same time. Good stuff.

Also most steamed veggies and gyosas take just 10-15 minutes to be done. Around the same time it takes to make rice!
